Obama’s Gay Agenda

Americans For Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH) is organizing a news conference Wednesday, June 17th at 11:00 AM, to highlight President Obama’s radical homosexual appointments and overall “gay” agenda.

This announcement, along with the accompanying spew of hatred and irrationality was waiting in the TPAN general e-mailbox today. Fine by me! It’s been awhile since I was steamed enough about something to blog about it!

According to the press release, the following are some of the items on our president’s radical gay agenda:
Obama’s radical appointments including anti-traditional-Catholic Harry Knox (of the homosexual lobby group Human Rights Campaign) and Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN) founder Kevin Jennings – yeah, because we only want traditional Catholics like those priests who’ve molested little boys for years and heaven forbid we should have someone who has worked to create a coalition of gay, lesbian, and straight educators.

Hate Crimes bill – because, of course, what this country needs is MORE hate crimes!

Obama’s radical promise to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) – uh-huh, and just what exactly does “marriage” need defense against? Are they seriously asking us to believe that if a happily married gay couple moves into the house next door to a happily married straight couple, the straight ones’ marriage will be destroyed? Not to mention that that particular “radical promise” has yet to be kept!

Obama’s ENDA (Employment Nondiscrimination Act) plans to force businesses to approve of homosexuality – are they seriously asking us to believe that just because an employer can’t refuse to hire someone simply because they’re gay,
that means he/she “approves of homosexuality?” News flash! Homosexuality exists, and doesn’t need anyone’s approval to do so! And all those homos need jobs! Would they prefer that all gay people be on Welfare?

Obama’s plan to homosexualize the U.S. military (repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”) – is “homosexualize” even a word?? And again, seriously, are they expecting people to believe that “Don’t ask, Don’t Tell” is the one thing keeping all the U.S. military men and women from being gay?

Obama’s confusion about Christianity, the Bible and homosexual practice – HUH???

Obama’s lack of mandate to push the envelope on homosexual and transsexual issues – what, like George Bush’s lack of mandate to prolong the war in Iraq? Dick Cheney’s lack of mandate to violate civil rights? And just what “envelope” is it that they think he’s pushed?

Clearly, it would be waaay too easy to dismiss these people as nutballs who live in a very limited world of their own fears, prejudices, and negative judgments. The fact that Obama was elected in the landslide he was proves that they have replaced environmentalists, New Agers (and I’m one!), and conspiracy theorists as the new Fringe Element. But should we be complacent about letting them draw attention to themselves? Should we shrug them off with a “Surely, no one with a brain will pay attention to this crap!”? Or should someone from our side of the fence infiltrate that press conference and report on just what was said and how many people attended? Or perhaps that’s why the release was posted in the late afternoon on the day before the news conference – I might actually have gone if I’d known about it soon enough to arrange the time off.

As it is, as I type this I suspect there is a group of fervent white folks in bow ties and crucifixes gathered at 29 S. LaSalle ready to be worked up into a lather about gay people being allowed to live and have rights like the rest of us. Hmmm…well, that’s what we get for buying into that whole freedom of speech thing.

But how does this make you FEEL???
I am clearly joking. In reading this, I feel your frustration, your sense of injustice. That is why it is so satisfying to read your work and to know you personally. The passion that comes through on the page is the same woman you meet in real life, just so everyone knows. This idea of a "gay agenda" always sounds so absurd! I don't know what that even means. I've been gay since I was at least 4 and I have yet to be invited to a meeting to go over our "agenda"! Good work as always.
