The CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) is accepting public comment on a proposed provision to cover the cost of dermal injections for the treatment of facial lipodystrophy syndrome (FLS) in HIV-positive people. The cut-off date for their acceptance of comments is January 22.
The proposed coverage decision limits the treatment to individuals "who manifest depression secondary to the physical stigma of HIV treatment." Of concern is the definition's arbitrary and vague language, as well as narrow scope. Specifically, limiting treatment to depressed individuals may exclude many victims of the syndrome.
You can view the entire decision memo and add your comment by clicking on the orange “comment” button at this link: Click Here
Once you are on the comment page, you must first click on the link CMS PHI Posting Policy and go to that page to read it, and then go back to the previous page and check the box that says “I have read and understand the CMS policy regarding redaction of PHI ” or you will not be able to enter your comment.
