Current DHHS Treatment Guidelines

Clinicians are recommended to construct an initial regimen (for first time therapy) by choosing one component from Column A plus one component from Column B*

Nevirapine 2

Atazanavir 4 (unboosted)

Fosamprenavir (unboosted)

Fosamprenavir + ritonavir once daily

Lopinavir/ritonavir once daily

Saquinavir + ritonavir

(in order of preference)

Zidovudine/ lamivudine

Didanosine + lamivudine 3

 

 
  1. Except during first trimester of pregnancy or in women with high pregnancy potential
  2. Nevirapine should not be initiated in women with CD4+ T-cell count greater than 250 cells/mm3 or in men with CD4+ T-cell count greater than 400 cells/mm3
  3. Emtricitabine and lamivudine are interchangeable
  4. Atazanavir must be boosted with ritonavir if used in combination with tenofovir
